evidence-based traditional acupuncture

The science of acupuncture has exploded in the past decades, with thousands of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published each year, covering a wide range of conditions. But a single study, no matter how well designed and rigorously implemented, cannot prove anything. Findings must be replicated several times before we can say anything has been proven.

Enter systematic reviews.

Systematic reviews sit at the top of the hierarchy of evidence (link), because we can have more confidence in their findings than we can place in single studies. These reviews aggregate results across all of the available scientific studies that meet the criteria for inclusion in the review.

In 2002, the World Health Organization released the first systematic review of all scientific studies of acupuncture (link). Subsequent systematic reviews have been carried out by the Australian government in 2010, and the United States Department of Veteran Affairs in 2014; the Acupuncture Evidence Project was launched in 2017.

Systematic reviews of the science of acupuncture have established that not only does acupuncture work, it works as well as, or even better than, conventional therapies for a large number of conditions.
